2012 Pharmacy Residency Match Fills All of Baystate's PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Slots
April 01, 2012: Baystate Medical Center matched all five of its open PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency positions in the Pharmacy Residency Match that took place on March 21, 2012. This year's Match had both the highest number of participating candidates and the most positions filled since the program's inception in 1979. Pharmacy residency are competitive—1,438 of this year's PGY-1 candidates did not match.
 
Emergency Medicine Residents Win 2nd Place in National Video Contest

November 01, 2011: The new Rays of Hope Center for Breast Cancer Research (ROH CBCR) wants to make sure their research is relevant and focused, especially because they are getting funding from the community—the Rays of Hope Foundation has awarded them $1.5 million over 5 years.

November 01, 2011: Dr. Garry Welch, Director, Behavioral Medicine Research, received the Mobilizing for Health grant for his project, "Developing and field testing an integrated mHealth solution to improve daily adherence to medications and blood glucose and blood pressure monitoring among older Type 2 diabetes patients."

NEGEA is the regional committee of the AAMC’s national Group on Educational Affairs (GEA).
 
"I'm Not Intimidated by Boston." Dr. Tashanna Myers Boosts Baystate's Clinical Trials
October 01, 2011: When Tashanna Myers, MD, Gynecologic Oncologist, arrived at Baystate Medical Center in August 2009, 2 major gynecologic studies were closing and there were no new protocols. Today, there are 20 active protocols covering all major gynecologic cancer sites, and 300+ women have been enrolled in clinical trials this year alone.

September 01, 2011: Dr. Peter Lindenauer, Director, Center for Quality of Care Research, received the $2.4 million award for his study, "Implementation and Outcomes of Noninvasive Ventilation in COPD."

Jane Garb Invited Panelist at HHS-Sponsored Health Data Initiative Forum
August 01, 2011: Presentation Highlights Baystate Medical Center's Innovations in Healthcare Geographic Information Systems (GIS) The Health Data Initiative Forum—whose 700 attendees were from the NIH, academia, public health, private business, and healthcare sectors—brought together data suppliers and data appliers on June 9, 2011 in Bethesda, MD with the aim of stimulating innovative use of publicly available health data to develop computer "apps" and services to improve health.

Baystate's Robotic Surgical Simulator (RoSS) Lends a Guiding Hand to Novice Surgeons
July 01, 2011: Baystate Medical Center Simulation Center's newly acquired Robotic Surgical Simulator (RoSS) is a training system that uses virtual reality to closely approximate the look and feel of the da Vinci surgical robot. It teaches the body position, hand articulation, foot movement and coordination, and robotic field visualization required to perform robot-assisted surgery.

2011 Match: BMC Has 94% Match Rate for Categorical Positions
April 01, 2011: Baystate Medical Center's 10 residency programs had an overall match rate of 94% for categorical positions (64 of 68), and 90% for all positions (65 of 72).
 
2 Ob-Gyn Faculty Members Receive ACOG-ACNM Prize for Paper on Collaborative Practice
April 01, 2011: Susan DeJoy, Chief, Division of Midwifery and Community Health, and Dr. Ronald Burkman, Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology, are the authors of "Successful Models of Collaborative Practice: The Baystate Story." Their paper was awarded second prize in the category of academic programs by the joint American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists/ American College of Nurse-Midwives committee on the Issue of the Year.
 
Tufts University School of Medicine Class of 2011 Bestows Teaching Awards
March 01, 2011: Tufts University School of Medicine Class of 2011 has selected 48 Baystate Medical Center faculty and 49 housestaff to be honored with teaching awards. The awards will be presented at the TUSM Senior Class Dinner.
 
All Internal Medicine Fellowships Receive Maximum Continuing Accreditation of 5 Years
March 01, 2011: Each of the 9 Internal Medicine fellowship programs underwent rigorous site visits by the Residency Review Committee (RRC) in 2010 to evaluate the level of fellow education and program supervision against established RRC standards. The result—the maximum accreditation cycle possible for all Internal Medicine fellowship programs.

Baystate's Radiology Program Recognized at Radiological Society of North America's Annual Meeting
January 03, 2011: At the 96th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) held November 28–December 3, 2010 in Chicago, BMC radiology residents had 6 educational exhibits, 2 of which won Certificate of Merit Awards. They were selected for this honor from among the 1,915 educational exhibits presented.
 
Baystate's IRB Cycle Times Compare Favorably to Other AAHRPP Member Institutions
January 03, 2011: AAHRPP released results of metrics of IRB cycle times for its member institutions in July 2010 for the first time. Baystate demonstrated better-than-average cycle times for 4 of the 5 measures, with only the overall cycle time for convened board reviews needing improvement.
 
Pritesh Gandhi, 4th Year Medical Student, Creates Medical Mentorship—A Community Service Project
December 03, 2010: The mentorship project, an initiative of Gandhi's non-profit Effect Health, pairs up medical students with 9th - 12th graders from Springfield-area high schools who are interested in becoming physicians.

December 03, 2010: The Education Research and Development (ERD) Office was created to conduct independent and collaborative medical education research, mentor faculty in education development and research, and develop and promote faculty development in areas related to education research.
 
Internal Medicine & Pediatrics Residencies Awarded $6.7 Million in HRSA Grants
November 05, 2010: Baystate's 2 awards are part of $167.3 million in ber 2010: Primary Care Residency Expansion (PCRE) grants—$16 million in Massachusetts—that will go towards building the primary care workforce and providing community-based prevention by funding 82 accredited residency training programs in general pediatrics, general internal medicine, and family medicine.
 
Center for Quality of Care Research Investigators Awarded 2 AHRQ Grants
October 15, 2010: Peter Lindenauer, MD, MSc, Director of CQCR, and Michael Rothberg, MD, MPH, have each been awarded a 3-year grant from Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), which together represent nearly 2 million dollars in research funding to Baystate Medical Center's Center for Quality of Care Research.

August 06, 2010: The Baystate Simulation Center was awarded reaccreditation at the June 23-29, 2010 meeting of the American College of Surgeons Accreditation Review Committee.
 
Baystate Human Research Protection Program Achieves Full Accreditation by AAHRPP
July 01, 2010: On June 11, 2010, following a rigorous application process, Baystate joined the ranks of 214 other organizations worldwide, such as Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital Boston, that have earned AAHRPP accreditation.
 
Center for Quality of Care Research Study of Doctor-Rating Websites Gets Mainstream Media Attention
July 01, 2010: Four researchers from the Center for Quality of Care Research published a study, "Patients’ Evaluations of Health Care Providers in the Era of Social Networking: An Analysis of Physician-Rating Websites", online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. The work has garnered quite a bit coverage by media outlets such as Boston.com and the Los Angeles Times.

First Patient Enrolled in National Study of Pioneering Surgery Technique
May 11, 2010: Surgeons at Baystate Medical Center have enrolled the first patient in a national multi-center study of the potential for a new surgical technique to be as effective and safe as traditional approaches while at the same time reducing recovery time, infection rates, postsurgical scarring and perhaps even health costs.

BMC Has 100 Percent Match Rate for Categorical Positions in 2010 Match
April 01, 2010: All 10 of Baystate Medical Center's residency programs participate in the National Resident Matching Program. They performed well with with an overall match rate of 100% for categorical positions (59 of 59), and 98% for all positions (62 of 63 positions).
 
BMC Chief of Cardiology advances understanding of common type of heart attack
March 23, 2010: Dr. Aaron Kugelmass, chief of the Division of Cardiology at Baystate Medical Center, presented findings last week at the American College of Cardiology’s Scientific Sessions 2010, advancing the medical community’s understanding of the best treatment for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a common--and deadly--type of heart attack.

February 01, 2010: REACH (Residents Educated in Alternative Cultures and Health)—Baystate's global health initiative—has established the International Health Travel Grants Program in order to provide some financial support to residents and fellows seeking a global health experience and to encourage them to incorporate international health as part of their careers.
 
Baystate Physician Spouses Association a Welcome Addition
January 01, 2010: Over the last year, an association for the spouses and families of Baystate residents and fellows has been formed. Christine Freda, whose husband is an attending physician in Nephrology, is the group’s president, and Shelby Mundy, whose husband is a Surgery resident, is vice-president.
