Baystate Chapter of the American Geriatrics Society Active in Community Education

February 01, 2013

In the latter half of 2012, Internal Medicine resident members of the Baystate Chapter of the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) have led four well-received teaching sessions for about 130 members of Baystate's Senior Class, a health and wellness program for adults 55 and older.

  • Exercise with the Doctors, led by Randa Jaber MD, Basmah Abdalla MD, and Maura Brennan MD, provided a brief introduction on the benefits and types of exercise, followed by practice of some standing yoga poses and basic Tai Chi movements.
  • Pain in Elders, led by Sora Al Rowas MD and Prasanna Durairaj DO, discussed the different types of drug and non-drug treatments for common causes of pain in older adults.
  • Advance Care Planning, led by Shinyin Lee MD and Michael Voisine DO, discussed health care proxies, living wills, CPR decisions, and the need to plan ahead.

The teaching sessions were arranged by Sue Fontaine, Senior Class Coordinator, and Dr. Maura Brennan, faculty leader for Baystate's AGS chapter.
