• Wesson Memorial Hospital founded

1908

• Wesson Maternity Hospital founded

1914

• Springfield Hospital approved by the American Medical Association to train interns

1936

• Springfield Hospital is founding member of the Massachusetts Hospital Association

1948

• Internal Medicine Residency program established and accredited by ACGME
• Surgery Residency program established (accredited by ACGME in 1949)

1951

• Anesthesiology Residency program established (accredited by ACGME in 1961)
• Pathology Residency program established (accredited by ACGME in 1961)

1952

• Diagnostic Radiology Residency program established (accredited by ACGME in 1973)

1954

• Medical Library established

1958

• Pediatrics Residency program established (accredited by ACGME in 1969)

1961

• Obstetrics-Gynecology Residency program established and accredited by ACGME

1971

• Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit established

1974

• Formal affiliation with Tufts University School of Medicine established
• Springfield Hospital and Wesson Women’s Hospital merge to form Medical Center of Western Massachusetts

1976

• Baystate Medical Center formed from merger of Medical Center of Western Massachusetts and Wesson Memorial Hospital, creating the second largest hospital in New England

1978

• First coronary bypass surgery at Baystate Medical Center.

 

1981

• First percutaneous coronary angioplasty at Baystate Medical Center (among first 100 U.S. hospitals to perform this procedure)

 

1983

• Combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency program established (accredited by ACGME as an independent program in 2008)

1985

• Cardiology Fellowship established
• Endocrinology Fellowship established
• Infectious Disease Fellowship established

 

Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Massachusetts

1986

• Franklin Medical Center (now known as Baystate Franklin Medical Center), in Greenfield, Massachusetts joins Baystate Health
• Baystate Medical Education and Research Foundation (now known as Baystate Medical Practices), the faculty practice plan, is established

1988

• Baystate Medical Center established as the Western Campus of Tufts University School of Medicine

1989

• Baystate Medical Center is a founding member of the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers (AIAMC)

 

Baystate Mary Lane Hospital in Ware, Massachusetts

1991

• Mary Lane Hospital (now known as Baystate Mary Lane Hospital), in Ware, Massachusetts, joins Baystate Health

1992

• Emergency Medicine Residency program established and accredited by ACGME
• Baystate Children's Hospital established as a Children's Hospital within a Hospital by NACHRI

 

1993

• Pain Management Fellowship established

 

1994

• Hematology/Oncology Fellowship established

 

1995

• Baystate Reference Laboratories established
• Collaborative Biomedical Research program established with the University of Massachusetts Amherst

1996

• Pioneer Valley Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice joins Baystate Health
• The Chestnut Outpatient Surgery Center opens

1998

• Geriatrics Fellowship established
• Cytopathology Fellowship established

 

1999

• Interventional Cardiology Fellowship established

 

2002

• Baystate Animal Care Facility established 
• Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute established in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Amherst
• Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship established

• D’Amour Center for Cancer Care opens
• Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship established

2005

• Baystate Medical Center achieves Magnet hospital designation for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center
• Nephrology Fellowship established
• Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship established

2007

• PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency program established in collaboration with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (accredited in 2009)
• Baystate Simulation Center and Goldberg Surgical Skills Laboratory opens and is accredited by the American College of Surgeons
• Critical Care Medicine Fellowship established
  

 

2009

• Psychiatry Residency program established (accredited by ACGME in 2008)

 

2010

• Baystate Medical Practices, the faculty practice plan, is formed from merging the Baystate Medical Education and Research Foundation, Baystate Affiliated Practice Organization, and Baystate Vascular Services
• Baystate Medical Center re-recognized as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center
• Emergency Ultrasonography Fellowship established.

 

2011

• Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship established
•  PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency established

 

2012

Entrance to Hospital of the Future in 2012

• Baystate Medical Center opens the 320,000 sq ft MassMutual Wing featuring the Davis Heart and Vascular Center
• International Emergency Medicine and Wilderness Emergency Medicine Fellowships established
