  • Springfield Hospital approved by the American Medical Association to train interns

  • Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit established

  • Formal affiliation with Tufts University School of Medicine established
  • Springfield Hospital and Wesson Women’s Hospital merge to form Medical Center of Western Massachusetts

  • Baystate Medical Center formed from merger of Medical Center of Western Massachusetts and Wesson Memorial Hospital, creating the second largest hospital in New England


1978

  • First coronary bypass surgery at Baystate Medical Center.

 

1981

  • First percutaneous coronary angioplasty at Baystate Medical Center (among first 100 U.S. hospitals to perform this procedure)

  • Franklin Medical Center (now known as Baystate Franklin Medical Center), in Greenfield, Massachusetts joins Baystate Health
  • Baystate Medical Education and Research Foundation (now known as Baystate Medical Practices), the faculty practice plan, is established


1988

  • Baystate Medical Center established as the Western Campus of Tufts University School of Medicine


1989

  • Baystate Medical Center is a founding member of the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers (AIAMC)

  • Mary Lane Hospital (now known as Baystate Mary Lane Hospital), in Ware, Massachusetts, joins Baystate Health

  • Emergency Medicine Residency program established and accredited by ACGME
  • Baystate Children's Hospital established as a Children's Hospital within a Hospital by NACHRI

  • Emergency Ultrasonography Fellowship established.
