Research has always been an important mission of the Critical Care Division at Baystate Medical Center. Currently there are over 12 on-going clinical trials studying different formulations for treating severe sepsis, adult respiratory distress syndrome, acute lung injury, and nosocomial pneumonia.
The Critical Care Division has won inclusion in some important clinical trials:
-
Prospective, Randomized Phase II Clinical Trial of Activated Protein C (Xigris) versus Placebo for the Treatment of Acute Lung Injury. (P50 HL074005). NHLBI
-
Clinical Centers for the Clinical Network for the Treatment of the Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) RFP No. NIH-NHLBI-HR-05-04. NHLBI
The Critical Care faculty are active clinical researchers with recent published research in outcome assessment, severity scoring, novel therapeutics for shock and ARDS, value-based care, cost analysis, ethics, sedatives and neuromuscular blocking agents.
The main research emphasis of the Critical Care Division at Baystate Medical Center is to allow the Critical Care fellow to understand the development of research ideas, the nuances of study design for a research project, to learn proper informed consent, both clinically and development of a consent form, to learn to develop a protocol, and to carry out clinical research in a kind, compassionate, and humanistic way.
