Baystate Medical Center has a strong tradition of excellence in graduate medical education. The first residency training programs, Internal Medicine and Surgery, began at Baystate Medical Center in 1948. The newest residency program is psychiatry, which in July 2009 recruited the first 4 residents in the 4-year program. Baystate Medical Center currently sponsors 10 residencies and 15 fellowship programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Over the past quarter century, since 1985, the number of ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs has grown from 11 programs to 25 programs, and from 131 trainees to 319 trainees projected for 2010-2011. Our residency graduates go on to highly competitive fellowship programs as well as clinical practice in the region, across the United States, and around the world.
