Goals
This elective offers the student the opportunity to participate in an active nephrology consultation program. The student will learn to evaluate and manage patients with acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, electrolyte disturbances, acid-base disorders, hypertension emergencies, hematuria and renal masses and edematous disorders including cardiorenal syndromes. Students will become familiar with the indications for the use of extracorporeal therapies including hemodialysis, continuous dialytic therapies and renal transplantation. Basic physiologic mechanisms are stressed as they relate to clinical nephrology.
Objectives
The student will
- learn to perform and interpret urinalysis in evaluating patients with acute and chronic renal disorders.
- review renal pathology.
- learn to measure and interpret estimates of glomerular filtration rate.
- perform consultations on patients with a wide variety of renal disorders.
- present new cases to the attending nephrologists.
- observe renal biopsies and intermittent and continuous hemodialysis.
- participate in four weekly conferences.
- observe outpatient nephrologic consultation and follow-up.
- have access to an on-line reading curriculum as an educational aid.
- participate in daily teaching rounds with the renal team including nephrology fellow, internal medicine residents and the nephrology attending.
