Goals
This elective is designed to explore the fundamental issues in defining, measuring, and improving healthcare quality and safety. The student will gain an appreciation for how healthcare quality is defined and of the practical application of evidence-based medicine.
Objectives
The student will explore…
- quality measurement and reporting including the practical use of “pay for performance”.
- health information technology and its application to improve care.
- the use of organization change in healthcare including employing concepts of “teamwork” and thinking of “safety as a system property”.
- he process redesign of our delivery system and how “reliable systems” can be applied to healthcare.
The student will…
- participate in a research or practical project surrounding either quality improvement or patient safety.
- will have the opportunity to see qi principles in action and participate in error analyses, peer review teams, and improvement projects.
