Our electives are open to all students attending a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

Baystate Medical Center Requirements for Medical Students
Requirements for medical student clerkships and electives at Baystate Medical Center may be different from those of your medical school. Students are responsible for meeting all Baystate Medical Center requirements before they can begin a clerkship or elective at Baystate Medical Center. This includes:

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND FILE REVIEW
A Baystate Health Background Release Form Disclosure & Consent with an original signature must be completed and received in the Division of Academic Affairs at least 2 weeks prior to the start of any clerkship or elective.

IMMUNIZATIONS (download pdf of BMC's immunization form)
All students must submit proof of the following at least 2 weeks prior to the start of any clerkship or elective.-
Tuberculin Skin Test - a negative TB test within 1 year or a negative chest x-ray within 5 years of a positive reading.

Varicella Immunity – a positive titer, or documentation of 2 doses of varicella vaccine. History of the disease is not accepted as proof of exposure.

Measles (rubeola) Immunity – a positive titer or documentation of 2 doses of measles vaccine.

Mumps Immunity – a positive titer or documentation of 2 doses of mumps vaccine.

Rubella Immunity – a positive titer or documentation of 1 dose of rubella vaccine
- Influenza - Effective September 14, 2009, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has mandated that all health care workers obtain the seasonal influenza vaccine and H1N1 influenza vaccine OR sign a declination of vaccine statement. This mandate is in effect from October 1 through March 31. Complete and submit the H1N1 and Seasonal Influenza form.

- CANCELLATION
Students must inform the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education with at least 30 days notice to drop a clerkship and elective in good standing.
- FEES
Students of LCME-accredited schools other than Tufts University School of Medicine apply through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS). The Baystate Medical Center non-refundable processing fee is $75 for each approved elective (up to 3 electives). This fee is in addition to the separate application fee that is paid directly to VSAS. Payment by personal check is made payable to 'Baystate Medical Center' and must be received within 10 days of acceptance. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the elective(s).
Students of AACOM-accredited schools apply directly to Baystate Medical Center. There is a $100 non-refundable application and processing fee assessed for each approved elective (up to 3 electives). Payment by personal check is made payable to 'Baystate Medical Center' and must be received within 10 days of acceptance. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the elective(s).
