Hello! So I was born and raised in Portland, OR, headed south to the Monterey Bay, CA for high school, and then further south to Riverside, CA for undergrad. I went to med school at Loma Linda University, and got married to my awesome husband Nathan in the middle of that insanity. Nathan is a physical therapist (so fortunately very flexible job) and we decided that we were looking for an adventure during my 3 years of residency. We wanted to move someplace completely different and be in a central location that could be close to tons of other great places to visit.
I also wanted to train at a program that had an incredible volume, vast diversity of patients, and most of all, a fantastic batch of people to work with. We were so fortunate to find all that and so much more in Baystate. The ED here seems to pulse with an energy of its own and all of the residents, attendings, and nurses are incredibly supportive and amazing to work alongside. Nathan and I feel so fortunate to have already made lasting friendships with people who have come from all over the country to work together at Baystate.
Other than work, this area of the country has a great variety of activities that we try to enjoy as often as possible. NYC and Boston are short drives away, not to mention Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine as well. There is everything from camping, hiking, and skiing (still have to make our way up to all the resorts in Vermont!) to museum-going, restaurant-sampling, and concert-listening. You can play in the morning and work in the afternoon! Better deal than I’d ever imagined for residency. You must be jealous already right?
