Internal Medicine Research Track

The Research Track is a special program for residents with prior experience in clinical research or previous training in internal medicine who wish to pursue a rigorous research program during residency.  Highly motivated individuals without one of these 2 qualifications may apply to the program as well.  The Research Track is particularly appropriate for residents who plan to apply for competitive fellowships and those considering a career in clinical research.

Goals

  • To support residents in design and conduct of an investigator-initiated research project, culminating in presentation at a national meeting, followed by publication.

  • Provide advanced didactic instruction on evidence-based medicine, biostatistics and research design

  • Advise residents interested in research careers

Highlights of the Track

Monthly Research Meetings

  • Held the second Tuesday of each month

  • Include didactic sessions on research design, biostatistics, evidence-based medicine and presentation skills.

  • Residents take turns presenting research in progress and getting feedback from other attendings and other track members

Research Elective

Track members are encouraged to participate in a closely mentored research elective month to allow extra time to work on labor intensive projects, to prepare for presentation and to draft a final manuscript for publication.  Content of the month will be negotiated between the participant and his or her mentor.

Participation in SGIM

Track members are encouraged to join the Society for General Internal Medicine and to attend the regional and national meetings.  Travel funds are available for all residents who are presenting an abstract at either meeting.

Abstract Presentation

All members are required to submit an abstract to the national meeting of their choice.  Additionally, there will be opportunities to present abstracts at regional meetings and at Baystate’s Research Week.

Mentorship with Successful Researchers

Mentorship is crucial to success in research.  Research track members, because of their commitment to challenging projects, will have access to mentors with significant research experience, who will coach them through each step of the process.
