A Day in the Life of an Internal Medicine Resident

5:30 am The alarm goes off and it’s the start of a new day.
5:40 The snooze button gets hit a few times and then I have a quick breakfast and I’m out the door by 6:00AM
6:25 I arrive at Baystate and head to the Medicine Library, but not before I get my first cup of coffee!
6:30 Catch up with the Night Float to find out the previous night’s events and get my rollover admission
6:35 Pre-Round on my team. I meet with my patient’s nurses and check in with each of my patients. My notes are started and I make sure to review each patient’s chart, vitals and labs in preparation for rounds.
8:30 The full team (third year-resident, my co-intern and the attending) meet to go over my patients and the each of their plans for the day.
10:00 My notes get completed, consults are called in and orders are put into CIS. I sneak in another cup of coffee!
noon Noon conference. Today’s topic is on cultural diversity and one of the residents speaks about their home country of Brazil.
1:00 pm I head to attending rounds where I present a case of syncope. We discuss the differential diagnosis and work-up. We head to the radiology department and review the patient’s head CT.
2:00 I receive an admission from the ER.
2:05  I admit a patient with a GI bleed to my team.
3:30 My third year resident and attending meet with me to review the patient I just admitted. We discuss a plan and go over my history and physical.
4:00 My sign out for the on-call intern and night float is updated, and I meet with the on-call intern to catch them up on my patients, especially my new patient who needs close monitoring.
4:15 I head back home to Northampton, and meet a few friends for a work-out at the gym.
6:00 Home quickly to change and then back out to meet my friends for dinner in downtown Northampton.
6:30 Sushi at my favorite restaurant!
8:30 I read up on my patient with the GI bleed and finish the novel I’ve been reading for the past few days.
