Joseph was born in Wilson, Pennsylvania. After graduating from college with a BS in biology, he continued on at Temple University receiving a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology. In his career as a scientist, he conducted two postdoctoral fellowships, co-authored several publications in the area of transduction and was awarded the National Individual Research Service Award. Ultimately, his work on various projects kindled an interest in clinical medicine and led him to his decision to apply to medical school. During medical school, he received the most satisfaction from interacting with patients and contributing to their care.  When he is not doing research, he enjoys outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, surfing and snowboarding.
