Nature & Scope
Houseofficers in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency will rotate in Obstetrics, Gynecology, subspecialty rotations as well as rotations in the Departments of Medicine and Emergency Medicine.
PG1 houseofficers on the Obstetrical Service perform admission history and physicals, follow and deliver patients on the "low risk" labor and delivery service in conjunction with a Certified Nurse Midwife and PG4 resident. Houseofficers will also scrub on post partum tubal ligations and cesarean sections.
On the Gynecology Service, residents will perform admission history and physicals, and follow patients assigned to them. They will scrub on uncomplicated gynecologic cases such as tubal ligations, D&Cs and other minor surgical procedures.
While on the Medical and Emergency Room Services they are responsible for the workup, evaluation and followup of patients assigned to them. During the rotation at the Prenatal Diagnostic Center they are responsible for evaluating patients including performing a full pedigree analysis as well as counseling the patient relative to the finding. In addition, they learn the basics of obstetrical ultrasound.
All rotations adhere to the ACGME resident work hour requirements. PG1's will take call on weekends. There is a night float rotation for weekday nights, Sunday - Thursday.
On all of the various services, they are responsible for reporting their findings and progress of their patients to the senior residents on the service and/or the attending physician. Residents are also responsible for maintaining their medical records and following the policies of Baystate Medical Center and the Department.
