Obstetrics-Gynecology Residency Curriculum PG3

Nature & Scope

PG3 Houseofficers in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency will rotate in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Ob/Gyn subspecialty rotations.

PG3 residents are responsible for performing the history and physical exams and followup of more complicated obstetrical cases as well as for the supervision of junior residents assigned to them. PG2 and PG3 residents assigned to the High Risk Service are responsible for all the in-patient admissions and physical examinations and followup of high risk patients such as those with diabetes mellitus, pregnancy induced hypertension, preterm labor and premature rupture of membranes. They will further enhance their skills in more advanced obstetrical ultrasound. They will scrub on more complicated cesarean sections and on operative deliveries. They will also act as consultants to the Baystate Medical Associates and Holyoke Care Associates Midwifery Services.

On the Gynecology Service, the residents are responsible for history and physical examinations and followup of patients assigned to them. While on this service, they will scrub on most of the benign abdominal gynecologic procedures and some less complicated vaginal procedures such as anterior/posterior repair.

While assigned to the Reproductive Endocrinology Service the PG3 works directly with the Reproductive Endocrinologists in the outpatient office, the IVF Unit and in the operating rooms.

In addition, they gain expertise in the performance of vaginal probe ultrasonography, operative laparoscopy, operative hysteroscopy, management of infertility, and management of endocrinology disorders.

In the Specialty Clinic rotation, they are responsible for the evaluation and treatment of patients with abnormal pap smears, workup and evaluations of patients requesting pregnancy termination, and for evaluating patients with urogynecologic problems. The PG3 works with the Gyn Division in the evaluation and treatment of all patients requiring colposcopy.

There is a PG3 resident night float rotation Sunday through Thursday. The other PG3s rotate call on the weekends. All rotations meet the ACGME work hour requirements.

On all of the various services, they are responsible for reporting their findings and progress of their patients to the senior residents on the service or the attending physician.

Residents are also responsible for maintaining their medical records and following the policies of Baystate Medical Center and the Department.
