The Education Program
There are 20 residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology at four levels, with diverse and challenging responsibilities. Residents actively participate in the preparation, development and day-to-day running of the educational program. They teach and supervise senior and junior medical students from Tufts University and other medical schools.
Inter-professional Teams
The educational program allows for multiple opportunities to learn in situations based on individual, small group and large group dynamics. The didactic program includes protected time for learning, as well as Grand Rounds, Journal Club, and interdisciplinary conference with experts from within the hospital and nationwide. As part of the learning environment, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides clinical services to women from all socioeconomic levels.
Residents work as part of a team of health care providers which includes certified nurse midwives and nurse practitioners. In the context of a busy clinical service, the residents' experience is reflective of the world residents will encounter post residency.
Facilities
The departmental facilities provide exposure for residents in state-of-the-art technologies and procedures. The Wesson Women and Infants Unit is home to a 38 bed labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum unit in which 4,500 births occur annually, a Perinatal Diagnostic Center, the region's only level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, in addition to well established programs in assisted reproduction and reproductive genetics.
Community Leadership
Beyond the walls of the medical center, the faculty and residents provide leadership and advocacy regarding womens' health issues. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides community outreach programs on a professional basis. The department has a reputation for excellence in womens' health care that goes beyond the region we serve.
