A wide range of opportunities for scholarly work await you at Baystate Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry.
As a resident, you will learn about research methodology in order to critically evaluate the psychiatric literature. You will choose an area of interest and prepare a critical review of the relevant literature to present to your colleagues and faculty. You will be encouraged to develop your own research project, and to present your results at a national meeting and for publication.
You will find skilled and supportive mentors for research projects at Baystate. Many of our faculty are principal or co-investigators on research grants in such diverse areas as renal palliative care, treatment of adolescent depression, access to psychiatric care, medical education, alcohol withdrawal, ADHD, and motivational interviewing.
For example, Dr. Bruce Waslick, who teaches the research methods course, was a member of the TADS Cooperative Group which has published a large scale controlled study on treatment of adolescent depression. He has continued his research into the treatment of adolescent depression at Baystate.
We are especially proud to announce that Dr. Lewis Cohen, one of the leaders in the field of renal palliative care, has been awarded both a Guggenheim and Bellagio Scholarship to complete work on his most recent book on health care workers involved in end of life care who were accused of murder.
Our list of selected publications will give you more information about these and other faculty research interests.
