Transplant Surgery Curriculum

It is the expectation of the attending physicians on this service that the third year chief resident will be accountable for the day-to-day running and decision making on the Service.

It is the explicit wish of the attendings on this service that all residents on this service scrub on cases appropriate to their level. Additionally, the more junior residents should second assist on cases of relatively special interest, i.e. kidney transplants, donor operations and major thoracic surgical procedures such as lobectomies, pnemonectomies and operations on the esophagus.

Resident Responsibilities

  • Residents will make work rounds twice daily led by the Chief Resident (PG3).

  • All patients will be seen by all residents as a group.

  • The Chief Resident is responsible for assigning residents to the appropriate jobs. When conflicts occur, the Chief Resident will discuss problems with the Service Chief.

  • Chief Resident is responsible for keeping track of all cases done weekly on service and will hand in list each week at Service Rounds.

  • Chief Resident is responsible for making M&M list and deciding in conjunction with Service Chief which cases should be presented and the points to be made about each case. This will be discussed at last service rounds of each month.

  • Residents are responsible for being at all conferences unless otherwise excused.

  • All cases booked during approved OR time will be covered. Since there is now OR time 5 days a week, cases done during the two days which are not approved OR time will NOT be covered unless true emergencies.
