School-Based Health Centers (SBHC)

What is a School-Based Health Center?

school-based health center (SBHC) is a place where your child can get quality health care in school. The SBHC is open when the school is open. A Nurse Practitioner who works with a Baystate Medical Center Children's Hospital doctor provides the care. The Nurse Practitioner also talks with your child's doctor so they can work together to take better care of your child.  You do not have to be at the SBHC when your child goes there for services.

What services are offered at the School-Based Health Center?

Your child can get:

  • Treatment for common illnesses
  • Lab tests
  • Examinations
  • Prescriptions
  • Sports physicals
  • Immunizations
  • Counseling and health education

Other services include:

  • Pregnancy testing
  • Prenatal care
  • Testing for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)

How much does it cost?

You are NOT charged for these services. The SBHC will bill your insurance company if you have one. SBHC staff can give you information to help you get Massachusetts medical insurance for your child if you don't have it.

How do I sign my child up for the School-Based Health Center?

To sign your child up for the SBHC:

  • Complete a consent form
  • Complete a registration form
  • Give both forms to your child to bring back to the SBHC.

The SBHC adheres to all Massachusetts laws. Under Massachusetts laws there are specific circumstances in which minors have the right to consent, on their own, to confidential diagnosis and treatment. These circumstances may include treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases, pregnancy, substance abuse and mental health. For such treatment, the parent/guardian is not responsible for payment. In addition, the law permits a minor to be treated in an emergency and to consent to his or her own care and treatment if he/she is married, widowed, and self-supporting. The minor is encouraged to participate in decisions about treatment and to share information with the parent/guardian when appropriate. If you have any questions, please call the School-Based Health Center for more information.
