As the Chief Operating Officer of the Baystate Health Eastern Region, Dr. Ahmed oversees day-to-day hospital operations at both Baystate Mary Lane Hospital and Baystate Wing Hospital and helps to lead the senior leadership team in the Baystate Health Eastern Region. He also serves as Chief Medical Officer at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital and the Baystate Medical Practices Eastern Region. Some of his main responsibilities include leadership for inpatient and outpatient practice operations, hospital medical staff oversight, provider recruitment, quality and patient satisfaction program oversight, leadership development, strategic planning and financial stewardship.
In 2003, Dr. Ahmed joined Baystate Medical Practices (BMP) as a practicing physician, Medical Director of Baystate Medical Practices-Mary Lane OB/GYN and the Chief of OB/GYN for Baystate Mary Lane Hospital. He was promoted to the position of Regional Medical Director for the Baystate Affiliated Physician Organization (BAPO) while assuming the Medical Director role for BMP-Quabbin Adult Medicine/Rapid Care Clinic in 2006. Four years later he was promoted to Chief Medical Officer for the Baystate Health Eastern Region and assumed his current role in September of 2014.
Prior to his arrival at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital, Dr. Ahmed served as the President of the Medical Staff, Chief of OB/GYN and a member of the Hospital Board of Directors at the Naval Hospital – Cherry Point in North Carolina.
Dr. Ahmed completed his BA/MD at Boston University and received his Doctorate of Medicine from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his OB/GYN residency training through Tufts University at Baystate Medical Center and is a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
In March of 2014, Becker’s Hospital Review named Dr. Ahmed one of the “Top 100 Hospital and Health System Chief Medical Officers to Know” in the nation. Physician leaders were selected based on their healthcare experience, awards they’ve received and their commitment to continuous improvement in safety and quality care.
