As Interim Chair, Dr. Higgins oversees planning, program, operational, financial, educational, and quality aspects of the Department of Medicine at Baystate Medical Center.
Dr. Higgins served for two years as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service. For eight years he ran the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at the Cleveland Clinic and for 11 years served as Chief of the Division of Critical Care at Baystate Medical Center. For the past two years Dr. Higgins has been Medical Director of Inpatient Informatics for Baystate Health with additional responsibility as Medical Director of Care Management. Dr. Higgins has served on the BMERF Board of Directors and has participated on numerous committees. He is actively involved in NIH and pharmaceutical funded critical care research. Dr. Higgins has co-authored two textbooks of critical care and more than 85 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Higgins received his medical school degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation followed by residency training in Anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He went on the complete a Critical Care Anesthesia Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Higgins earned his Masters of Business Administration from the Isenberg School of Business at the University of Massachusetts. He is Board certified in Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology and holds a Certificate of Special Qualification in Critical Care Medicine.
