As medical director of Cancer Services, Dr Mertens is responsible for the delivery of cancer care throughout Baystate Health. He heads the Baystate Regional Cancer Program which includes services delivered at the D’Amour Center for Cancer Care, the Comprehensive Breast Center and the Katz Oncology Unit at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, as well as the oncology units at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, and Baystate Mary Lane Hospital, Ware. He oversees cancer program strategy, quality and process improvement as well as the program’s academic endeavors.
Dr Mertens completed his undergraduate and medical training at The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. A medical oncologist, Dr. Mertens has specialty board certifications from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He also holds a masters of science in business administration from Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan. His previous positions include director of Biometry and Outcome Measurement, London Regional Cancer Center, and director of quality assurance and associate professor of medicine at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University, Detroit.
Widely published in the areas of sarcoma, genitourinary malignancy and breast cancer management, Dr. Mertens’ current research interests include medical management topics, cancer patient supportive care, and informatics in cancer management. His current clinical focuses are head and neck, lung and breast cancer.
