Richard B. Wait, M.D., PhD.

Dr. Wait is in charge of the surgical enterprise which includes three operating room facilities performing 28,000 surgical procedures each year, and supervises approximately 300 surgeons and surgeons-in-training. He and his team have developed a nationally recognized simulation center for teaching physicians and other allied health personnel. Dr. Wait also supervises 9 large surgical practices.


Dr. Wait has been practicing surgery for over 30 years and maintains a practice in hepatobiliary surgery. He was formerly Professor and Chair of Surgery at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and has been Tufts Professor and Chair of Surgery at Baystate since 1998.


Dr. Wait earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, his MD Degree in 1978 and his PhD (Anatomy) in 1979, both from University of Vermont. He completed his surgery residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in1983. He has been the recipient of NIH grants and has authored more than 70 articles in scientific journals. He serves as editorial reviewer for several scientific journals and currently serves as the Secretary of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons.
