Baystate Franklin Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Offers Annual Coaches’ Education Clinic

GREENFIELD -- Baystate Franklin Medical Center’s Sports Medicine Department will sponsor its tenth annual Coaches’ Education Clinic, Injury Prevention, Education and Rehabilitation for the Young Athlete,, on Thursday, July 26, from 5 - 9 pm, at Northampton High School, 380 Elm Street, Northampton.  During this free sports medicine clinic, experts will discuss topics that pertain specifically to keeping young athletes safe and healthy.

 

Participating in the program are four sports medicine experts: Darius Greenbacher, MD; Jonathan Banz, MPT, OCS, COMT; Sean MacLaughlin, DPT, OCS; and Jason Mayerhofer, MPT.

 

Medical director of Baystate Franklin Medical Center’s Sports Medicine Program, DR. Greenbacher is an active athlete himself, and works closely with area high school athletics programs.  Dr. Greenbacher will address The Female Athlete Triad, a condition that combines disordered eating, amenorrhea and osteoporosis. 

 

Banz, a physical therapist with Baystate Rehabilitation Care at BFMC, will present A Focus on ACL Injuries:  Injury Prevention, Education & Rehab.  He will give an overview of the knee and ACL, its structure, function, mechanism and prevalence of injury, risk factors and injury prevention.

 

Also a physical therapist at Baystate Rehabilitation Care at BFMC, MacLaughlin will discuss The Core:  Beyond Sit-Ups and Crunches.  He will cover the anatomy of the “core” muscles and their role in spinal stability including exercises that will help target these muscles and prevent spine and lower extremity injuries.

 

Mayerhofer, a third Baystate Rehabilitation Care physical therapist, will present Concussions – What We Now Know.  He will explain the pathology of a concussion, how it is treated (from both a physician’s and physical therapists; standpoint) and what can be done to prevent concussions.
