SPRINGFIELD, June 26th--Consumer Reports has released its first-ever rankings of the country’s heart surgery programs, and there’s a familiar name at the top.
Baystate Medical Center is among the top 15 hospitals in the U.S. for heart surgery.
The respected consumer publication evaluated the nation’s hospitals on two types of heart surgeries, surgical aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass surgery. Baystate was one of only two hospitals in New England—the other being UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester—to make the list of 15 standouts nationally.
While other hospitals in the region did well in one of the two surgeries, Baystate’s standout performance stems largely from its high performance in both categories. The data come from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, which represents physicians who operate on the heart and other areas of the chest.
In 2012 the Baystate Heart & Vascular Program brought transcatheter aortic valve replacement or TAVR to the region, which allows doctors to replace a failing aortic valve through a tiny incision in a patient’s groin or abdomen, making the surgical fix available to a much wider population of patients—people who wouldn’t be candidates for a traditional open heart surgery due to other illnesses, age, and potential for complications.
