Pediatrics

As the only accredited children’s hospital in the region, Baystate Children’s Hospital (BCH) provides a comprehensive range of children’s primary care and sub-specialty services — over 50 inpatient and outpatient services in all, including many not found anywhere else in our region, including a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which is the regional tertiary care facility for newborn infants delivered in Western Massachusetts who require highly specialized care.

Quality improvement focus in the division of Newborn Medicine has been on early identification and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity, reducing infection rates, and most importantly, reducing mortality.

The BCH quality improvement focus is pediatric patients with asthma.  In several areas of our region, the prevalence of childhood asthma is among the highest in New England, and BMC has been a leader in developing an integrated strategy for improving the care of children with asthma as an active partner of the Pioneer Valley Asthma Coalition.  This effort has included participation in design and implementation of the pilot Massachusetts Department of Public Health Asthma Disparity Initiative.
