The inpatient Electroconvulsive Therapy Service (ECT) accepts patient referrals from the community and from other hospitals. The service includes a comprehensive evaluation of the patient to determine appropriateness for ECT. The staff educates patients and their families about the ECT procedure. This is performed by an experienced team of psychiatrists, anesthesiologists and nurses.
After the ECT course is completed, recommendations for further care are made, including advice about continuation therapy with psychotropic medications or maintenance ECT. Outpatient and Educational Services The Electroconvulsive Therapy Service provides consultation to determine whether a patient can benefit from outpatient ECT.
The treatment team administers the course of ECT while the referring therapist continues to follow the patient. Members of Baystate’s ECT team are available to give presentations at hospitals and clinics in the area.
