Breastfeeding Support

Whether or not to breastfeed your baby is a personal choice that you should discuss with your physician.  In making this important decision, you should consider the many healthy benefits of breastfeeding for both you and your baby.

Breastfeeding is a natural process, but even so, most first-time mothers need some preparation and guidance to ensure that their breastfeeding experience goes smoohly.  That's why Baystate Mary Lane Hospital makes lactation and breastfeeding classes available and also offers a free weekly Breastfeeding Support Group for breastfeeding mothers and their babies.  There are options to meet every need:

  • The Preparation for Childbirth class at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital includes a session on breastfeeding that you may attend as part of the five-week course or on a stand-alone basis.
  • When you deliver your baby at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital, you can request breastfeeding counseling from a member of our professional staff.
  • Breastfeeding Support Groups: Contact La Leche League at www.lalecheleague.org or 508-987-1794.
  • Breastfeeding for Multiples - This class at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield addresses the needs of women who plan to breastfeed twins or triplets.  Call 413-794-BABY (794-2229) for more information or to enroll.
