Established in 1996 under the leadership of Dr. Grace Makari-Judson, the Comprehensive Breast Center started out in a small office, and then opened its doors at Baystate Medical Center's 3400 Main Street facility in Springfield, where it remains today. It has been redesigned and expanded over the years, as the D'Amour Center for Cancer Care has opened next door at 3350 Main Street.
The Comprehensive Breast Center in Springfield is dedicated to promoting strategies for screening and prevention and works hand in hand with the D'Amour Center for Cancer Care to coordinate treatment for women with breast cancer.
At the heart of the Comprehensive Breast Center's philosophy toward the detection and treatment of breast disease is multidisciplinary collaboration, the model for the team approach.
The Comprehensive Breast Center at Baystate Medical Center is the flagship of the Breast Health Network, which includes Baystate Franklin Medical Center and Baystate Mary Lane Hospital, taking the lead in developing practice guidelines and a model of care for the process of diagnosis and treatment.
High quality care remains the number one focus of the Comprehensive Breast Center. For women with benign breast disease, this means clinical, pathologic and radiological correlation of findings. In the care of the woman with breast cancer, there is meticulous attention to detail while reducing redundancy among providers. This is ensured by presenting new cases at the Multidisciplinary Breast Pathology Conference and by the development of clinical pathways.
Patient satisfaction scores are consistently in the highest ranges. Oncology Quality metrics have been reviewed through the national Quality Oncology Program Initiative (QOPI). When our information was compared to over 350 programs across the country, we scored highly in the 95th percentile (100% score was achieved in 11/13 measures of quality care). Nurse navigators assure that patients are well informed at every step of the way and that care is well coordinated.
The Comprehensive Breast Center is proud of its partnership with Rays of Hope - A Walk Toward the Cure of Breast Cancer.
