Clinical and Reproductive Genetics

Genetic counseling is a process that communicates information about inherited conditions within a family. Risks for genetic conditions are assessed by a genetic counselor based on information provided by the patient. The goal is to provide the patient with a complete understanding of the implications of the genetic condition in question. Genetic counselors are trained in the areas of medical genetics and psychosocial counseling. They assist the patient in making decisions regarding genetic testing and medical management. Genetic counselors do no make decision for their patients, but facilitate the decision-making process.
