In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Baystate Reproductive Medicine, the only full-service IVF program in Western Massachusetts, has participated in the birth of over 2000 babies since the program started in 1990.

We have one of the best IVF pregnancy rates in the region, which allows us to limit the number of embryos transferred and decrease the incidence of triplets and more) while still maintaining high pregnancy rates.

All of our physicians are board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology.

About IVF

IVF has become an established treatment for many forms of infertility.  The main goal of IVF is to allow a patient the opportunity to become pregnant using her own eggs or donor eggs and sperm from her partner or from a donor.  This is an elective procedure designed to result in the patient's pregnancy when other treatments have failed or are not appropriate.

The IVF Cycle

An IVF cycle typically includes the following steps or procedures:

  • Medications to grow multiple eggs
  • Retrieval of eggs from the ovary or ovaries
  • Insemination of eggs with sperm
  • Culture of any resulting fertilized eggs (embryos)
  • Placement (transfer) of one or more embryo(s) into the uterus
  • Support of the uterine lining with hormones to permit and sustain pregnancy

Other Related Procedures

Baystate's Success Rates

In its most recent report on IVF success rates 2009, the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) identifies Baystate Reproductive Medicine as the program with the highest IVF success rates in the state of Massachusetts in three of four age categories while adhering to the guidelines for numbers of embryos to transfer.

For the state’s top six rankings for women under 35, BRM had 52.1% of transfers resulting in babies born, besting the national average of 47.5%. For women ages 35-37, BRM had a 52.6% success rate, far surpassing the national average of 38.2%.
