Newborn Medicine

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Baystate Medical Center Children's Hospital is the only regional facility available for the care of sick newborn infants in Western Massachusetts. It is a regional resource for perinatal and neonatal care and is a designated Level III center by the Department of Public Health.

Our modern clinical facility is a 55 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and 2nd largest in the commonwealth of Massachusetts. In addition, we have an active neonatal transport program, available 24 hours a day 7 days a week for transporting sick babies to the Neonatal ICU.

Approximately 11,000 babies are born in Western Massachusetts and of these 5,000 infants are born at the Women & Infants' Unit at Baystate Medical Center. In general, 10-12% of babies require some kind of Neonatal ICU care.

Development of organized, sophisticated state of the art NICU in the region has dramatically improved the survival rate for the very low birth weight infant. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has a mulitidisciplinary staff of approximately 120 professionals to meet the ongoing needs of the infant and the family. Baystate Medical Center Children's Hospital has a full component of pediatric subspecialist to provide comprehensive care to the infant.
