Baystate Medical Center Stroke Support

Baystate Medical Center cares for more than 500 stroke patients each year – more than any other hospital in Western Massachusetts. Baystate is the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, and offers the only inpatient specialty Neurosciences Unit, as well as extensive rehabilitation services for stroke patients.  

Baystate Rehabilitation Care provides inpatient stroke rehabilitation services which include a variety of therapy and support services, including nutritionists, rehabilitation therapists, case managers, and social services. Patient and family education is provided, and care coordination and early discharge planning help to ensure a smooth transition to post-acute care.

Once patients are discharged, they typically enter a post-acute facility for rehabilitation.  When the patient is ready to be discharged from a post-acute facility to a home setting,  Baystate Visiting Nursing Association & Hospice  is available to provide in-home rehabilitation services for stroke patients throughout Western Massachusetts. In addition, Baystate Rehabilitation Care offers a full range of outpatient stroke rehabilitation services and a specialized neuro-rehabilition therapy program to help stroke patients regain function.

Stroke Recovery Program

We evaluate and rehabilitate stroke patients from the time of hospitalization through their return to the community or most appropriate level of care.  This usually involves referring them Baystate Rehabilitation therapists who work with patients and families to restore the highest level of function possible.

- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physicians

- Audiology services

- Physical therapy

- Occupational therapy

- Speech/language therapy

- Recreational therapy

- Social work services
