Ovulation induction (OI) is a treatment option for women having difficulty conceiving. The OI process involves stimulation of the woman's ovaries through daily oral and/or injectable medications. Ovarian response is monitored with ultrasound alone or bloodwork and ultrasound depending on the medication being taken. When ovarian stimulation is complete, ovulation is triggered by a final injection of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) or by LH kit monitoring. Frequently, intrauterine insemination (IUI) is done 24-36 hours after hCG administration.
IUI is the process where a small volume of sperm is inserted directly into the uterus. Prior to insemination, sperm is prepared in the laboratory to separate the motile sperm from the seminal fluid. This process can improve sperm parameters. Pregnancy test can be done two weeks after IUI.
