What is a Concussion?

A sports-related concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury experienced during an athletic event that may result in a wide range of symptoms.  This does not require loss of consciousness, but may include symptoms such as:

  • Altered level of consciousness (drowsy, hard to arouse, or similar changes)
  • Confusion, feeling spacey, or not thinking straight
  • Headache
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Memory loss of events before the injury or immediately after the concussion
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Moving clumsily
  • Answering questions slowly, appears sluggish
  • Confused about the current play, assignment
  • Does not know score, opponent, location of game
  • Balance disturbance, complains of dizziness
