Intensive Care Unit

Critically-ill medical and surgical patients are cared for in the Intensive Care Units located at Baystate Medical Center, Baystate Franklin Medical Center, and Baystate Mary Lane Hospital.

 

Clinical experience in the units address:

  • Respiratory failure
  • Renal failure
  • Hyperalimentation
  • Septic shock
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring and control
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Complex postoperative care

 

The ICU at BMC maintains an active educational program, including bedside teaching rounds, daily classroom teaching sessions, visiting lecturers, and a core curriculum of ICU subjects repeated on a monthly basis.

 

The critical care faculty are active clinical researchers with recently published research in outcome assessment, severity scoring, novel therapeutics for shock and ARDS, value-based care, cost analysis, ethics, and sedative and neuromuscular blocking agents. A one-year Critical Care/Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship, accredited by the ACGME is available.
