Ophthalmology Surgery

An ophthalmologist is the medical doctor (MD or osteopath) who is educated, trained, and licensed to provide total care of the eyes. Total eye care includes performing comprehensive medical eye examinations, prescribing corrective lenses, diagnosing diseases and disorders of the eye, and surgical procedures necessary for their treatment. Only an ophthalmologist can provide total eye care.

Currently, Baystate Medical Center is the only site in Western Massachusetts offering 25-gauge vitrectomy, a minimally invasive sutureless surgery that can help patients whose diabetes has taken a toll of their eyes.   Learn more about sutureless vitrectomy....
