Weight Loss Surgery Program (Bariatric Surgery)

Baystate Medical Center's Weight Loss Surgery Program employs leading edge surgical techniques to get the results obese patients desire when diet, exercise, and behavioral change alone don't meet expectations and health needs.  Between 2006 and 2011, our board certified bariatric surgeons have performed over 2,000 weight loss surgical procedures.

Weight Loss Surgery Program staff recognize that obesity is a disease that profoundly affects each person's life in a different way.  Program professionals help patients design a personal weight loss experience that understand that patients may be facing medical, social, and emotional difficulties as a result of being overweight.

A commitment to weight loss is a lifelong journey. Unfortunately, we do not understand how to cure patients of morbid obesity. Surgery to treat morbid obesity does not cure the disease either: rather, it is a tool that can help you in the fight against the disease. This tool will ultimately fail unless it is used correctly – incorporating dietary changes and regular exercise. Further behavioral modification is critical to the success of surgery for weight loss. All the weight loss operations are designed to cause early satiety- that is, to get full with a smaller volume of food. But it is vitally important to make good food choices, and to exercise regularly to burn calories.  Program participants have access to a team of expert surgeons and specially trained dietitians, psychologists, physicians, physician assistants and nurses to help them through all phases of care:

- Preoperative education

- Bariatric surgery procedures

- Postoperative counseling

- Dietary management

We also offer a comprehensive Support Group system that helps patients maintain their weight-loss.

In 2007, Baystate's Weight Loss Surgery Program was accredited as a Level 1 Bariatric Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS BSCN) and in 2010, the program was re-accredited and was granted 'full approval'  by the ACS BSCN). Learn more....
