Baystate Medical Center delivers the highest level of weight loss surgery care according to the American College of Surgeons. Accordingly, the ACS has re-accredited Baystate Medical Center as a Level 1 bariatric surgery center May 2010.
The American College of Surgeons developed its Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program to foster high-quality surgical care for patients who undergo bariatric (weight loss) surgery. The program surveys each program for its:
- Physical resources
- Human resources
- Clinical standards
- Surgeon credentialing standards
- Data reporting standards
- Verification/approvals processes
The Level 1 designation from the ACS assures patients that Baystate's Weight Loss Surgery Program provides complete tertiary care, with resources devoted to bariatric surgery. It indicates that our bariatric surgeons can manage the most challenging and complex patients with optimal opportunity for safe and effective outcomes.
Level 1 centers can engage all:
- Levels of obesity
- Standards of care for weight loss operations
- Ages (we perform bariatric surgery only on adults, age 22 to 65)
- Co-morbid conditions
- Re-operations.
They are high-volume practices that perform 125 or more weight loss operations annually, staffed by at least two credentialed and experienced bariatric surgeons, each performing at least 50 primary weight-loss operations annually.
