Flex Team is one approach to staffing inpatient units at Baystate Medical Center . The Flex Team is a pool of dependable, flexible, full-time and part-time registered nurses with skills in a group of similar care units. This staffing structure rewards employees for their flexibility and gives managers the ability to meet patient care needs when census or unit staffing fluctuates. The result is a more stable workforce and a more satisfying work environment. The Flex Team staff support a team of ‘core’ employees who regularly work on a unit.
 
The Flex Team provides another employment option to full-time and part-time nurses who enjoy working in more than one unit and who are attracted to the program’s educational opportunities and pay incentive.

Flex Team employees commit to part-time or full time employment with regular benefits and are prepared to work on all units within a specific cluster: (Medical/Surgical, Pediatrics, Cardiac, Intermediate, and Critical Care). Flex Team staff are canceled before core staff during periods of low census. Flex staff will receive a per-hour differential in acknowledgment of the flexibility in their work assignment.
