Summer Student Scholar Program
at Baystate Medical Center and
University of Massachusetts Amherst
Mentor Information
Baystate Medical Center and the University of Massachusetts Amherst sponsor a 10 week summer scholar research program. Students are rising seniors or between first and second years of medical school. They come from across the Northeast and some from other parts of the United States. This program offers faculty with research in medical, biomedical, public health, or behavioral health research to serve as mentors for students who are exploring the potential of medical and research careers.
We are looking for several faculty mentors who have an active research project(s) that could involve a student during the summer. We will match the research interests of the mentors and of the students. If you are interested in being a research mentor for a summer student working on your project, please complete and submit the online Mentor Application.
Mentor Responsibilities
Faculty mentors are responsible for mentoring the Summer Scholar through a research project. Mentorship may be either directly with the student, indirectly with a graduate student or other suitable mentor, or a combination. The faculty mentor is ultimately responsible for the research experience and must provide the necessary work space, computer access, training, and supplies for the Summer Scholar to be successful. The faculty mentor or graduate student mentor should also attend the student presentations near the beginning and end of the experience. Faculty mentors are expected, if asked, to participate in providing a lecture or lead a discussion for the group of Summer Scholars.
About the Summer Student Scholar Program
The Summer Student Scholar Program runs from Friday, May 31, – Friday, August 6, 2010. Students receive at $3,500 stipend from the CBR. Students also participate in a seminar series provided by the CBR on research methodologies. Students present their research hypotheses and specific aims at the end of the first week of the program and their results at the conclusion of the program to students, faculty, and mentors.
This program offers students the opportunity to participate in medical research that is part of your larger project but with a research experience that is designed for the student and under the direct mentorship of a full-time faculty member of Tufts University School of Medicine or the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
