Clinical Activities

The Baystate Medical Center Pharmacy Department provides comprehensive inpatient clinical and outpatient services. Utilizing a state-of-the-art CPOE system and other advanced technologies, pharmacists provide safe, effective, evidence based and patient focused pharmaceutical care.  The Pharmacy Department is comprised of more than 80 full-time employees including managers, clinical pharmacists, clinical specialists, technicians, students and support staff.  Our pharmacists are involved in clinical decision making at the bedside, in the pharmacy locations and in administrative capacities. Research Activities

The Clinical Pharmacy Staff serve as backup to the Investigational Drug Service (IDS) Pharmacist. The service typically has roughly 150 protocols with about 50 of those actively screening and enrolling patients. Active enrolling departments include:

  • Cardiology

  • Genetics

  • Cardiac and General Surgery

  • Pedi and Adult Endocrine

  • Neurology

  • Pediatric Medicine

  • Hematology/Oncology

  • Nephrology

  • Anesthesia

  • Emergency Medicine

  • Pedi and Adult Infectious Disease

  • Adult and Pediatric Psychiatry

  • Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery

  • In Vitro Fertilization


General responsibilities of the IDS office include but are not limited to the ordering, handling, inventorying, and dispensation of study/investigational medications, creating randomization schemes, randomizing patients, and adhering to all FDA requirements via Hospital established quality assurance and sponsor and governmental audits. In addition the IDS at Baystate Medical Center also provides service to our two affiliated hospitals: Baysate Franklin Medical Center and Baystate Mary Lane Hospital. The Team also services several community based Hospitals and Physicians practices.
